A research project on post-partum sequelae of the hypertensive diseases of pregnancy.

Another project that MRH had embarked on is a research project and below is a summary of the project.
For this particular project a grant of $10,000.00 was realized from AWDF (African Women’s Development Fund)

Research Proposal
Post-partum sequelae of the hypertensive diseases of pregnancy.

Objectives
1. To determine what proportion of women with hypertension in pregnancy have elevated blood pressures (> 140/90 mm Hg) and significant proteinuria, 6 weeks, 6 months and 1 year after delivery.

2. To determine what risk factors are associated with a persistently elevated blood pressure 6 months to 1 year after delivery?

3. To determine potentially predisposing factors for the development of non-pregnant cardiovascular disease (e.g. stroke, heart attack), such as plasma creatinine, urinary albumin:creatinine ratio, plasma insulin/glucose ratio, lipid profile, (i.e. LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides), total homocysteine and plasma renin activity. Anthropometric data such as body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio, waist circumference of the mother, and weight, height and head circumference of the baby will also be studied.

This research has been submitted for publication and is awaiting feedback.
